In anticipation for an early morning of lobstering, I loaded the boat the night before and turned in early to be ready for the 4:15 a.m. subconscious alarm clock. Unfortunately, the morning broke with thick fog and zero visibility. I had to abandon my lobstering until later in the day.
The late afternoon was as nice as it gets here in Maine, with glassy calm conditions and temperatures in 70s. With four hours until dark, I asked Captain Curt to join me to speed up the hauling and to help get through all the traps. Captain Curt was pleased to make the ride due to picture-perfect weather conditions and also to get a better look at my secret lobstering spots. Normally I am quite secretive; however, I made a business sacrifice to let Captain...

The arrival of Memorial Day weekend has brought the start of summer for us here in Maine. Early Sunday morning I was fortunate enough to spend the entire day on the water in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Catch a Piece of Maine. Sure, most everyone would like to try. However, even if you can't lobster as a way of life you can follow the lobstermen who work for brothers Brendan and John Ready.
The Readys grew up in Cape Elizabeth and lobstered with their uncle. Now, decades later and with the notoriety of earning the U.S. Small Business Administration's Young Entreprenuers of the Year Award, the Readys bring the realities of catching lobsters to national and international customers. They were the first to sell a lobster trap — and all it catches in a season — to customers, in a sense creating community-based aquaculture. See more of their handiwork at www.catchapieceofmaine.com and enjoy their blog here.
