Melonie Bennett
My photography is an ongoing visual diary of my family and friends and the times we share together. I developed my point of view growing up on a dairy farm in Gorham, Maine.
Because of the nature of farming, home and family were everything to us. We only had each other for entertainment as we were stuck at home taking care of the farm 365 days a year. As in every family we had serious issues hanging over our heads all of the time. There were constant worries about the lack of money; the possibility of losing the farm, working too hard and alcoholism were chief among them. To avoid tension we developed ways of coping, mostly through laughing, eating and talking. Any subject was open for discussion or scrutiny, including mundane activities and daily rituals.
I watched what went on around me at home very closely and this is where I developed the way I see. I love to point things out that I can’t believe are happening in front of me and share them with others. We all have a choice of how we participate in the world. Living in the moment is difficult in our society. I am striving to capture the little moments that make up the bigger picture of who we are.
