Take a Historic Walking Tour, York

Strolling through almost any Maine village can seem like a bit of a history lesson, as the traditional features of our Queen Annes and Colonials tell a bit of a story about when the homes were first built. But sometimes it helps to have an expert decipher a few of the less obvious tales, and the folks in York have set up a couple of spectacular tours for a July afternoon. The hour-long excursions offered by the Old York Historical Society will take you through the town’s distinct areas: York Village, York Harbor, and York Beach, and start at just four dollars a person. Costumed interpreters at each of the society’s buildings explain who lived and worked in the historic structures back before Maine ever existed. The children (and, admit it, more than a few adults) will want to get their photograph taken while trapped in the pillory at the circa-1719 Old Gaol, but the guides take the experience a step further by allowing you to actually meet the jailer’s family. You can add to the experience even more by signing up for one of the historic demonstrations offered regularly, from a hearth-cooking lesson to an explanation of the history of laundry. Make sure to check out the new exhibit on southern Maine folk art on display this summer in the Remick Barn, and don’t forget to drop by the Jefferds’ Tavern and the George Marshall Store, the latter of which now serves as a top-notch art gallery. 207-363-4974. www.oldyork.org
