Celebrate the Clam, Yarmouth

The young (and young at heart) will thrill to the gravity-defying Thunderbolt and Zipper, but there is a lot more to the Yarmouth Clam Festival than carnival rides. Head across the street from the fields at the William H. Rowe School to the Town Hall Memorial Green, and you’ll find the trademark white booths along with a lot of, you guessed it, clams at the forty-third annual fair. This three-day festival celebrates the mollusks, fried or steamed, in cakes or in chowder, and through events like the Maine State Clam Shucking Contest on Saturday. You can indulge in lots of other tasty treats as well, such as strawberry shortcake, lime rickeys, fried dough, French fries, and, of course, lobster (available in rolls and steamed). Explore the food booths and know that your money is going to some good causes, as the volunteer-run stations all benefit local clubs, teams, and nonprofit groups. Once you’ve eaten your way around the semi-circle, head up the hill to the North Yarmouth Academy campus to peruse the crafts booths selling everything from jewelry and furniture to caricatures and pottery. This being the third day of the festival, the crowds might be slightly smaller, depending on the weather, but if you’re a parade buff, don’t miss the parade on Friday night and the fireworks on Saturday night. Check the schedule for musical and other performances and demonstrations, such as the Pat’s Pizza Clam Festival Classic five-mile road race. Sunday, don’t miss the diaper derby on the Memorial Library lawn. For more information call the Yarmouth Chamber of Commerce at 207-846-3984 or visit www.clamfestival.com
