A Month of Fun: Thursday, July 31

Take a Ferry and Play Nine Holes of Golf, Chebeague Island

End the month of July with a short trip just minutes from Portland that will get you out on the water and onto the softly rolling greens of the largest island in Casco Bay. Park in Cumberland off U.S Route 1, hop on the shuttle bus out to Wharf Road on Cousins Island, and board the Chebeague Island ferry (or you can go directly via Casco Bay Lines from the Old Port) to visit this island of approximately 350 year-round residents. (Even cooler, the island recently became its own town!) The fifteen-minute boat ride from Cousins Island will bring you to Stone Wharf, just a stone’s throw, literally, from the Great Chebeague Golf Club (207-846-9478), which dates all the way back to 1920. Golf club officer and longtime island resident Jim Van Fleet warns, “beware of the seventh hole — our signature hole, if you will. You have to hit from the ‘lobster trap’ tee across the inlet to an elevated (slanted) green.” The spectacular views and the over-the-water shot combine for a tough par three. Van Fleet describes the course in general as a “Scottish link-style course. You can see the ocean from some place on every hole,” he notes. “It’s a short, fun course, just under three thousand yards. And it’s a convivial course — you can talk to people fairway to fairway.” If you’re hungry after an afternoon on the course, grab a bite at Calder’s Clam Shack on North Road. www.chebeague.org
