Book Showcases Down East's Most Popular Historical Photographs
What's in a Picture, published by Down East.
Surveys, letters from readers, and comments submitted online all tell us the same thing: Down East readers love history. More than that, they love seeing interesting and arresting historical images of Maine, and then learning some information about those images that they would never have seen on their own.
For the past six years Joshua F. Moore, Down East's deputy editor, has combed the state of Maine from Kittery to Calais and Fort Kent in search of
these interesting photographs. See a digital sample of his book, "What's in a Picture? Uncovering the Hidden Stories in Vintage Maine Photographs," here. Also, through November 21, 2008, online readers can also enjoy 20-percent off this Down East book by entering promotional code NWP when they use Down East's online bookstore.
Once he finds an image that strikes him, he sets about scrutinizing every tiny detail in the photograph, whether it's the length of the shadows cast by a telephone pole or the ghostly silhouette of someone in a second-story window. These details can take days of research to fully understand, but in the end Moore is able to take readers on a trip through the photograph like even the original photographer might not have been able to do, explaining what events transpired to bring a cameraman to open his shutter and, often, what unfolded even after the photograph was made. By bringing together fifty of his favorite images in one affordable and impressive volume, Moore takes his readers on a visual tour through Maine and through time.
Among the comments from early reviews of "What's in a Picture? Uncovering the Hidden Stories in Vintage Maine Photographs":
“Joshua Moore gives us a guided tour through fifty outstanding photographs from Maine’s past. Each image reveals a fascinating, often forgotten aspect
of the state’s history.” — Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr., Maine State Historian
“Moore brings more than good magnifying equipment to the utterly fascinating 50 images included here ... He brings humor and esoteric bits of history,
glimpses of oddball occupations, old-fashioned machinery.” --- Working Waterfront
“The ice-covered building in Augusta certainly qualifies as a show-stopping image.” — Bangor Daily News
“Moore finds these old photos and then researches them, examining them for details and background the casual observer would miss. The result is often a funny, always fascinating and entertaining caption with a bit of nostalgia and Maine history.”— Kennebec Journal
