At Its Best:

Telltale Signs of Spring in Maine's Largest City

    1. Ice-Cream shops re-open. Red’s in South Portland is always first with a mid-March opening. Beal’s in the Old Port is never far behind.

    2. The Farmer’s Market returns to Monument Square. It may be one very lonely farmer bundled up and selling dried flower wreaths, but it still gets people pumped.

    3. Ducks, not ice-skaters, on Deering Oaks pond.

    4. Cops pulling people over for still having their studded snow tires on after May 1.

    5. Maine Maple Sunday

    6. For sale signs on every house in hopes that tourists will buy. This goes hand in hand with the inability to find a parking spot on Commercial Street.

    7. Lambing season at Wolfe Neck Farm.

    8. Smaller snow piles. Covered in dirt, they are almost unrecognizable but we know. Oh, do we know.

    9. Geary’s Summer Ale. Who cares if it three more months until summer? I can sing 99 bottles of beer on the wall.

    10. Meeting people on the street you haven’t seen since November.
