How to Walk
One Mainer's Manifesto.
It is frightening to see how many adults no longer know how to walk.
In the span of a single generation we’ve gone from a nation that used to enjoy a walk down Main Street to a nation that drives to the gym to walk on a moving carpet.
I notice it especially in certain visitors to Maine. Even on vacation they walk as if the whole point of what they are doing is to get somewhere. As if what happens in between doesn’t matter. Or worse, that it’s some kind of chore, a burdensome expenditure of their time. [For the rest of this story, see the April 2008 issue of Down East.]
