Islesboro might just be Maine's most exclusive island. Whether that's a good or a bad thing is open for debate.

Islesboro, a small archipelago in West Penobscot Bay, is a twenty-minute ferry jaunt from a motel-lined stretch of Route 1 in Lincolnville, but it feels a world away. Thirteen miles long and nowhere more than two miles wide, the main island hosts a handful of stores, one inn, and no banks, not even an ATM. Islanders call trips to the mainland "going to America." Islesboro, to them, is "Fantasy Island."
"It's kind of like living in Oz," says Chris Dickman, innkeeper of the luxurious Dark Harbor House.
