SOS. In this case the old distress signal would mean Save Our Station. The irony of the situation here is hard to miss -- lifesaving stations like this one, which once protected dangerous stretches of coastline from Kittery to Calais, rescuing boats and sailors from the maw of the sea, are now themselves in need of help. About a decade ago, this southern Maine station was in danger of being destroyed. Thankfully, a friends organization was founded to save it, and the town is currently working with the American Lighthouse Foundation to help preserve this station and the old lighthouse nearby.
