- Chilly Beach
At first glance, the white sand and the clear, blue-green water might lead you to believe this gorgeous beach is somewhere in the Caribbean. In fact, It is located on a Maine island that is part of an archipelago. The archipelago is bounded on the southwestern side by Chandler Bay and on the northwestern side by Englishman Bay. The main island is distinctly "H" shaped. - A Mile Of RockA long quay, built of blocks of cut granite, is the primary feature of this lighthouse that guards the entrance to a busy commercial and recreational harbor. The quay is not merely a way of getting to the lighthouse but is also a breakwater that makes the harbor a much calmer place when a nor'easter comes howling.
- Fisherman's Paradise
Camps that have boathouses on stilts, with footbridges, are particularly unique to this region of Maine. The name of the principle town here is also that of a city in the former Yugoslavia. - rugged coast
Prior to its incorporation in 1897 under its present name, this town was known as Green's Landing and it is on an island reachable by car. During the Civil War this town endured the great sadness of losing a vast number of her sons, fathers, and husbands. - One Pretty Village
The Hesper and the Luther Little used to rest here. Originally built to carry coal from Boston, the schooners couldn't compete in the age of steam and were left derelict, slowly falling in on themselves, broken masts jutting skyward. The wrecks were finally demolished in the late 1990s. - Upcountry Resort
In addition to the lakes seen in this photograph, there is a whole cluster of lakes in a remote part of western Maine that is known collectively by the name of this town. You have to go through Mexico to get here, if you are coming from the south. - Woodland Wasteland
When most people think of Maine, the last thing they picture is an area like this. Unfortunate farming practices in the days before erosion control was well understood caused the loam over the area in this photograph to be stripped away. This left a large area of sand surrounded by forest. - Out Of The West
This river flows through three major locations where it is used for manufacturing, and was once listed as one of the top ten most polluted rivers in the United States. For those who ski, the Sunday River empties into it. - Living History
This community was initiated in 1783 by an intrepid group of Christian missionaries calling themselves "The Society of Believers," who practiced the dictum, "Hands to work; hearts to God." The members of this sect have also left their mark with their remarkable gift for simple and elegant design.
