A New Look for the Harbor
A range of ideas will bring needed investment to Portland.
The Portland City Council recently sent an important message to would-be developers: Maine's largest city is open for business. The council approved a change in zoning for the Maine State Pier and nearby land owned by the city. Doing so is the first step in a process that could bring new development to the east end of the waterfront, including a hotel on or near the pier. The change in zoning was controversial. It represents a liberalizing of the city's waterfront ordinance, which has protected marine uses on the city's shoreline for nearly twenty years.
