Chebeague's First Christmas
Following its recent secession from Cumberland, Maine's newest town has reason to celebrate.
Nearly every day since 1940, when she moved into the Chebeague Island home of her new husband, Mabel Doughty has awakened to the sight of sandy Bennetts Cove. “I never get tired of it,” says the octogenarian with hazel eyes and white hair in a simple cut. Sitting at her kitchen table, framed by a view of the Nubble, a granite outcrop lapped by glittering waves, she acknowledges, “We are really very fortunate.”
