Where in Maine?

If history had taken just a slightly different course, school kids might have been learning Dutch in this pretty coastal town -- or more likely French. This small burg, built on a peninsula shaped like an ax, was at the center of the century-long war between the French and English over control of North America. Four nations (including the Dutch) have flown their flags over this storied port, site of many battles, including a dustup between Paul Revere and the British navy. In some ways history has done this place a favor; with its four-square clapboard buildings, the community looks as attractively antique as only a New England town can. Today it's a peaceable place -- nobody has tried to invade in a couple of centuries now -- and it's known more for its institution of higher learning, its pleasant downtown, its venerable inns, and its very big boat than for its historic rogues and conquerors. For which we can all be thankful. Have you ever been to this photogenic town? Drop us a note if you have.
