It took an off-season expedition through the shops of southern Maine to give me the dreaded antiquing bug.

We haven't been off the highway for more than two minutes before Marguerite cries out her first sighting. I've been on any number of treks and adventures in the wilds of Maine with my friend, the painter Marguerite Robichaux, but even this is quick for her eagle eye.
"Right there," she says, pointing, as I whiz past. A flurry of deliberations ensues. Should we stop or press on? Of course there'll be more chances, but what if this is the one? Suddenly we decide in unison to go back. I slam on the brakes, veer into a parking lot and spin around.
