Beachtown Boomtown
Scarborough is the fastest-growing town in the state. Is this the suburban future of Maine?

Diana Slowinski's roots in Scarborough are deep, and her story spans both the history and the geography of Maine's fastest growing town. Her grandmother ran the town dump at Pine Point, the shorefront neighborhood adjacent to Old Orchard Beach, and for a while her father worked at Sherman's Store, a general store several miles away in inland North Scarborough that sold penny candy and encouraged locals to stop in and play checkers.
Like many longtime residents, Slowinski remembers the Portland suburb when it was a collection of rural villages centered around fishing and farming.
