One crisp fall afternoon a farmer named Perley Russell called from Penobscot, about forty-five miles from my office, to ask me to treat a case of bloat in three yearling heifers. At about two o'clock I arrived at a shabby little farm, which I had never before visited. The falling-down house and dilapidated barn looked like the Dust Bowl photographs from the Great Depression. Beside the barn was a small cleared area covered with ground juniper, small pines, and fir trees. Fenders, bumpers, and all manner of debris from ancient vehicles were strewn about.
