Al Diamon

Bad Timing

On June 26, the same day the Portland Press Herald announced 36 job cuts and the closing of four news bureaus, it wasn’t all gloom and doom at the newspaper’s headquarters.

    Well, actually it was.

But you’d never know it by the cheery memo sent to all employees – including those who’d just gotten the ax – by Rob Bickler, the paper’s general manager.

“I’m pleased Dan Montgomery has been promoted to circulation director of the Portland newspapers,” the memo read. “Please join me in congratulating Dan on his well-deserved promotion.”

I’m sure Dan will understand if a few of his co-workers didn’t make a point of shaking his hand. They’d probably had enough shaking for one day.

Hey, Al: Any idea what's happening at MaineToday.com? The site has been "down for maintenance" all day. Will it be back?
