New Face at Statehouse News Service
Christopher Cousins, the city editor of the Times Record in Brunswick, will become the new reporter for the one-person Statehouse News Service. Cousins replaces Victoria Wallack, who is leaving at the end of this week to become director of communications for the Maine School Management Association.
Cousins is a former reporter for the Advertiser Democrat in Norway. He moved to the Times Record in 1999, where he covered Bath Iron Works, the Brunswick Naval Air Station and other beats.
After spending a year as a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, he returned to the Times Record in 2007 as city editor.
He begins his new job in mid-October, according to Alan Baker, publisher of the Ellsworth American. Baker helped Wallack found Statehouse News in 2004 and was instrumental in choosing her replacement.
Cousins’ work will appear in eight weekly, one tri-weekly and two daily papers across the state. The weeklies include the Boothbay Register, the Camden Herald, the Capital Weekly (Augusta), the Ellsworth American, the Lincoln County News (Damariscotta), the Mount Desert Islander (Bar Harbor), the Republican Journal (Belfast), and the Wiscasset Newspaper. The tri-weekly is the Courier Gazette in Rockland. The dailies are the Times Record and the Journal Tribune in Biddeford.
Wallack’s work also appeared in the several of Current Publishing’s weekly papers in southern Maine, including the American Journal and the Lake Region Weekly, but publisher Lee Hews said her company did not plan to continue the service after Wallack departs.
