Becky's Diner: Best Breakfast in America
Becky's Diner: Best Breakfast in America
Ok, so I’m a little late on the pick up with this press release (the magazine was released back in February) but I wanted to revisit this article,  “Breakfast in America,” for two reasons: 1) vocabulary and 2) Breakfast inspiration.

Details lists twenty-five places “to go for a morning repast—fluffy eggs, buttery pancakes, house-smoked bacon—that could outshine a four-star dinner.”

Our very own Becky’s Diner  tops the list.  It’s great press, no question.  But I was surprised by the adjective they used to describe Mainers:  “Owner Becky Rand’s menu seems ordinary on paper—French toast; home fries with cheese, peppers, and onions—but the hoary Mainers and informed vacationers who fill the red vinyl stools well before dawn know better.”

Good to know that Mainers are “hoary” (definition: gray or white with or as if with age; extremely old).  It certainly seems like an odd choice.

Portland Breakfast Club disagrees with Details in an October 16th 2007 posting with a complete slam of the local favorite.

I’ve been to Becky’s many times and have enjoyed my meals. I do have to say that Boynton McCay’s in Camden  puts up a tough fight, though. Their chorizo and egg skillet is to die for, and their pancakes aren’t bad either. Are there any other breakfast spots in Maine that should have beaten out Becky’s?

I agree with Boynton McCay's; the huevos rancheros are delicious. If you can stand the crowds, Cafe This Way and Two Cats in Bar Harbor have great breakfasts. I was disappointed by my one visit to Becky's--the blueberry pancakes were burned.

What's better than Becky's? Bintliff's! It's the de facto meeting place for my group of Maine diaspora every holiday break. Eggs Florentine with a Bloody Mary is how every morning should start.

Boynton McKay's in Camden has a "breakfast wrap" that is a huge favorite in our family!

"Cafe' this Way" in Bar Harbor - is always fun too...they make their own corned beef hash too!

About The Maine Mouth

We don’t need Saveur, Gourmet, and Food & Wine magazines to tell us (though we appreciate the mentions) that our state is renowned for its culinary excellence. From fresh produce to plates of haute cuisine, it’s all here, and The Maine Mouth will help you find it. A combination of Maine food information and inspiration, The Maine Mouth is the place where you can get the word of mouth advice that will lead you to the good eats—and all that is related to it—from York to Fort Kent. I’ll be traveling across the state to farm stands, top restaurants, burger joints, bakeries, clam shacks, ice cream stands, wineries, and more, and reporting about the places worth seeking out. Plus I’ll include some recipes and stories from my own Maine experiences. I hope you'll help by sending in your own suggestions and comments so the Maine Mouth spouts off (pun intended) a true food dialogue that spans the entire state.
