Kate's Butter — A Maine Winner!

Maine’s own Kate’s Homemade Butter, made in Old Orchard since 1981, just won a very important prize in the world of dairy. At the 2008 World Dairy Expo Championships in Wisconsin, Kate’s received first prize in the category of unsalted butter according to this article on the Boston Globe’s website on Wednesday.
Now for those Hannaford shoppers among you, I have to express my butter dilemma (always unsalted) that I encounter when I make my way to the dairy section. The lure of our nearby neighbor Cabot in Vermont is strong. It is pretty creamy, made here in New England, and, let’s just say it, cheaper.
That said, the beaming face on the Kate’s package always catches my eye, beckoning me with its superior taste and the fact that it’s local. I know I should buy it, but for $3.99? Cabot is $2.79. I do, more often than not, go with Kate’s.
We should all be grateful that we have a top-notch product that just happens to be the best unsalted butter in the country!
Maine had some other winners at the expo. Gifford's Orange Sherbet won first prize in the sherbet category. Giffords also took second place in the chocolate ice cream category.

It is very refreshing that we are able to support a local business that is truly in existance to provide the best product possible to the consumer. Mr. Patry has proven again and again, year after year, that he takes pride in what he creats. What an accomplishment to be proud of and a great ambassador to the state of Maine.
