Shakespeare in the Park
Jessica Tomlinson
For many years, the Children’s Theater of Maine did a free summer Shakespeare production in Deering Oaks park.I don’t go out of my way to see children’s theater or Shakespeare for that matter but I was a religious attendee of these summer shows, sometimes going more than once a week with my blanket and picnic.
The kids were always zealous in their performances, putting heaps of passion into their acting. Even if they delivered their lines a bit too rapidly, the language remained. The good writing always shined through, a beacon.
And then it all stopped. The Children’s Theater faced financial difficulties. The outdoor Shakespeare came to an end.
It found a new beginning, in a new place, like many things in Portland do. One thing dies and another pops up. This place is a Hydra.
The Stage emerged, with professional actors presenting free Shakespeare in South Portland, on the water at Spring Point.
Like many Portlanders, it takes a lot for me to cross the bridge. While geographically, probably the same distance within city limits, the barrier is more psychological.
While similar, it just wasn’t the same.
