Sharing Summer Food Favorites

As summer approaches (or rather makes quite a forceful entrance with this heat wave), Mainers and Maine foodies alike begin to dwell on some common themes. It's like a biological clock, ticking slowly all winter: come June, we just crave lobster, farmers' markets, al fresco dining, fried clams, ice cream, and all things grilled. It's in our blood. And while I have scouted out a few of my favorite spots for these scrumptious Maine treats, I want to hear what you have to say. Luckily, DownEast.com

Lobster Empathy Center

PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, has proposed a Lobster Empathy Center, according to its website and the BDN. The new center, the first of its kind in the world, would be housed in the vacant Skowhegan jail building.

Lobster Primer

A Wild Game Feast on Toddy Pond

Siggie Cognetta and her team up in Toddy Pond, on the Blue Hill peninsula, think beaver, moose, and venison. Which is why, when I went up to the third annual Wild Game Feast a few weeks ago, I was prepared to sample many fruits of the forest - I just wasn't prepared to like them so much.

First Fiddleheads
Submitted by Kathleen Fleury on Mon, 05/12/2008 - 9:31pm.I have to admit that this past Friday was my first experience with fiddleheads. For years I had imagined what they tasted like. An earthy asparagus, I told myself. Or perhaps a tougher, more-bodied spinach. Being back in Maine in May and cooking for myself, the forces finally aligned and it was time. I bought a bag at Fresh Off The Farm on my way home and voila.
