A Crib Sheet of Maine Info You Need to Know — December 4, 2008

Worcester Wreath Co. is donating thousands of Christmas wreaths that will be placed on graves at Arlington National Cemetery. The 30-truckload caravan will leave Harrington Sunday and head toward Bangor. Wreaths will be placed on December 13.

 

Representative Janet Mills has been selected as the next  Attorney General of Maine by a majority of Maine lawmakers. Mills is a former prosecutor and three-term senator from Farmington. Maine women, it would appear, are ascending to top political and governmental posts at record pace (see below).

President-elect Barack Obama's pick for ambassador to the United Nations has ties to Maine. Susan Rice is the daughter of Lois Dickson Rice, a Maine native, and her family has a summer home in Lincolnville. She was in Portland in January and presented the keynote at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast Celebration.

Maine has become the first state in the nation to be represented by a majority of women in the US Congress. In November Chellie Pingree became the first Democratic woman ever elected to the Congress by Maine voters. Senator Susan Collins won re-election to the United States Senate, where Senator Olympia Snowe remains.

A former University of Maine basketball standout has been named Miss Maine USA and will compete in the Miss USA Pageant in 2009.

Hannaford Supermarkets hopes to increase its share of the prescription-market pie, and is establishing a community-based pharmacy benefit for communities. (If you care to debate the pros and cons of this move, join Maine's Bulletin Board, here.

December 1, 2008:

Matthew Simmons, via his Ocean Energy Institute, has proposed a 5 gigawatt wind farm for the Gulf of Maine. The project could cost in excess of $20 billion.
