Postcard from Maine
January 7, 2009

Owners of the largest hotel in Maine are looking for a buyer. Holiday Inn By the Bay in Portland has 239 rooms and 14 conference rooms.

That might be good fodder for the Portland Daily Sun, a newspaper hoping to muscle its way into the state's largest city. The Portland Daily Sun will be a free paper.

In Carrabassett Valley, far from the masses, voters may consider annexing part of Redington Township in an effort to develop mountain-top acreage into a 30-turbine wind farm.

January 6, 2009:

The state’s largest daily reports revenues are down at the Maine State Lottery, indicating Mainers may have less tolerance for chance in a soured economy.

Not everything is heading downward. Home heating oil prices posted a slight increase, the first since July 2008, this month. The average per-gallon price increased by one cent to $2.28.

Chellie Pingree will be sworn in as Maine’s first Democratic congresswoman today. She was elected to represent Maine’s 1st Congressional District in November.

January 5, 2009:

Outdoor retailers are waiting for a rush on ice-fishing gear in hopes those who escape cabin fever by spending time on Maine’s frozen ponds and lakes will buy new equipment. So far few anglers are nibbling. The Morning Sentinel is reporting high demand for Kennebec River ice shanties, yet meager sales of ice-fishing gear.

The same cannot be said for fish farm manufacturer in Searsmont, Maine. GreatBay Aquaculture has sold several of cavernous, submersible aquaculture pens that are propelled through the seas via remote control. The cages leave shore with up to 25,000 fingerlings and travel offshore — diving up to100 feet below surface level if needed — while carrying a payload of fish that fatten along 18-month journey before they become ready for market. Developers say the contraptions take fish farming far offshore, away from complaints of unsightly, shoreline holding pens.

As human consumption of white fish increases — and natural fish populations stagnate — some say aquaculture is one of the best hopes for helping supply meet demand.
