A Band for Birders

You know those little metal bands that scientists attach to the limbs of migrating birds to track their travels? Well, now you can have your very own. Don’t worry, these birder bands are not destined for limbs (per se). Rather, they are for human binoculars (or purses, necklaces, fingers, and other creative hosts). The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife came up with the twenty-dollar band to raise funds and provide a service to birders in Maine: not only do the proceeds go toward bird conservation efforts in the state, but if you happen to misplace your binoculars (a key tool in the sport of birding) the finder can call the number on the band and report the customized registration number. The bands are available through the IF&W Web site www.state.me.us/ifw/ or by calling 207-287-8000.
