Bass Harbor Light gets on the new Maine quarter.

Nine years ago, Pemaquid Point Lighthouse became the first lighthouse to ever appear on United States currency, number twenty-three in the State Quarters series. Now there are two. Bass Harbor Head Light graces the Acadia National Park quarter released earlier this summer as part of the United States Mint’s America the Beautiful series. “There are no tales of heroic lightkeepers, and there are no ghost stories,” said Timothy Harrison, a resident of Whiting and the founder of the American Lighthouse Foundation, who spoke at the quarter’s launch ceremony at Acadia’s Hull Cove Visitor Center in June. “But it is a beautiful lighthouse in the most popular and, I would argue, most historic national park in America. Every photograph taken of it, no matter the angle or the time of day, is gorgeous.” No argument from us.
