From Fitz Henry Lane to Leo Brooks to Nancy Morgan-Barnes, the Maine waterfront has caught the eye of artists for centuries. In his slide talk “Artists of the Maine Waterfront” at the Penobscot Marine Museum, art writer and poet Carl Little offers an array of art highlighting this remarkable obsession. In addition to classic Maine waterfront subjects by the likes of Edward Hopper, George Bellows, and Marsden Hartley, Little includes many images by today's artists, including those featured in the show. Over the course of the talk, viewers visit a host of harbors, from Portland and Port Clyde to Matinicus, Monhegan, and Stonington. Waterfront subjects range from a peapod tied to a dock to a pair of Grunden's foul weather gear. Little is the author of many books, including Paintings of Maine, Edward Hopper's New England, and The Art of Maine in Winter. He recently lectured at the Bates College Museum of Art and the Ogunquit Museum of American Art.
