At 9:00A.M. this morning, a legislative hearing on Maine's same-sex marriage laws began at the Augusta Civic Center. Up for debate, LD 1020, which would define marriage as between two people, and LD 1118, which would give registered Domestic Partners the same benefits and rights as married couples. According to a poll conducted by Pan Atlantic SMS Group Omnibus of Portland, Mainers are split roughly down the middle: 47.3 percent support changing the Maine law to allow marriage to be between two people regardless of sex, and 49.5 percent oppose it. The margin of error is 4.9 percent. Drilling down a bit, the poll found that 49.5 percent of Mainers ages 18 to 34 support same-sex marriage. That number drops to 31.7 percent in the over 55 category.
