Is All Sprawl Evil?
These days, news of a new subdivision coming to town is often met by grimaces and concern about sprawl eroding Maine's rural character. But a proposal for a new subdivision north of Wiscasset is forcing Mainers to reconsider their stance toward development. Jason Peacock is building a home with environmentally friendly materials and plans to heat and cool it with renewable energy, from solar panels to a wood-fired furnace. He hopes his home will become the model for up to a dozen more tightly clustered homes on his thirty-four-acre parcel. Can the "Prettiest Village in Maine" also be home to an off-the-grid enclave?
