Maine Prepares for Wind Power

Offshore wind and tidal energy potential off the coast of Maine could equal the capacity of 100 nuclear power plants according to Governor Baldacci.  At three sites floating test turbines will be anchored in deep water to test the possibilities of harnessing this power, with the first test turbines expected to be on site by 2011.  In Maine waters, up to 50 miles off the coast, wind alone could produce 149,000 megawatts of power.  The governor's goal is to bring online enough offshore windmills to produce five gigawatts of power by 2030, which is twice Maine's current level of consumption.
