The Maine Beaver Deceiver
Us bipeds aren’t the only ones struggling with rain rage. With the complete deluge of rainfall that has been summer 2009, Maine’s beaver population has climbed above normal. The burgeoning population has come along with an increase in homeowner complaints, especially in southern Maine, where beaver dams are blocking roads and creating flooding. One Brownfield man has taken it upon himself to help out the creatures, even tampering with the town’s “beaver deceiver” drainage system — a complicated system of drainage pipes designed to keep the road clear of water. But as frustrated residents and lawmakers look on, he might be going his conservation efforts alone.
