Follow the Federal Money Trail
When it comes to spending the federal stimulus funds, Maine beats all other states in committing 100 percent of allocated funds. Cumberland County has spent more of the state’s allocation of federal Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds than any other Maine county. With expenditures topping $16.8 million, much of Cumberland’s allocation has supported educational programs for children with disabilities. Penobscot County follows close behind, spending some $14.7 million in federal funds to date. Lincoln has spent the least amount, tallying $1.2 million in federally funded expenditures. A county-by-county, line-by-line accounting of federal stimulus funds used in Maine is available here.
