Maine Bridge Battle

The Memorial Bridge is to Route 1 passengers what the Piscataqua River Bridge is to I-95ers: the delightful, emotional, anticipated welcoming into the state of Maine. The bridge also happens to be the nation’s oldest vertical lift bridge, completed in 1923. According to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Maine and New Hampshire, which own the bridge jointly, are considering replacing the structure.
