A Key to Congress
Few Maine businesses are watched as closely as L.L. Bean. So when the Freeport retailer announced recently that it was closing its outlet on Congress Street in Portland, business leaders in the Forest City took notice. Never mind that the store, the closest to Bean's flagship and brand-new outlet, won't actually shut its doors until September. City councilors in Portland are already trying to line up a tenant for the 20,000-square-foot space, which may grow to 26,000 square feet if the neighboring Olympia Sports store closes at the same time, as the landlord expects. Possible new tenants being courted include Trader Joe's and Reny's, though neither company would confirm that it is interested in the site.
