Hope for an Augusta Landmark
The dilapidated 1913 Colonial Theater is the focus of a restoration effort that aims to make it the jewel of Augusta's main drag, Water Street, once more. On Thursday, the nonprofit Colonial Theater Inc., which envisions a future with live theater, concerts, lectures and other events, gave city councilors the grand tour, complete with fresh popcorn and a concert by guitarist Jonathan Johnston. While voicing support for the restoration effort, however, councilors urged speedier attention to structural issues they said posed safety hazards.
