'Bridge in Backpack' for Belfast

<p>The 48-foot-long span under construction on Herrick Road in Belfast is the largest "Bridge in a Backpack" in Maine.

The Bridge in a Backpack technology -- so named because its carbon fiber components fit into a hockey bag -- was developed by Habib Dagher at the University of Maine Advanced Structures and Composites Center. The carbon-fiber tubes will be filled with concrete at the construction site, and the bridge is expected to have a longer life than conventional steel or concrete bridges and be maintenance-free.
