Ex-Mainer Testifies Over Eggs
Austin "Jack" DeCoster, the former Mainer and egg producer who is at the center of the recent salmonella outbreak, told Congress on Wednesday that his company grew too fast to allow it to implement the necessary safety measures to prevent bad eggs. DeCoster has been cited numerous times in Maine over the past several decades for everything from poor working conditions to environmental infractions. As recently as this past June, DeCoster settled an animal cruelty case by paying more than $100,000 to the state for increased animal husbandry oversight.
