Toss a Coin, Buy a Lighthouse
Local real estate developer Art Girard and WIndham neurosurgeon Dr. Jeffrey Florman ended their bidding war for the Ram Island Lighthouse on Friday morning with a coin flip, but the fate of the lighthouse won't be known until the auction ends on Monday.
Prior to their coin flip at Florman's office in Maine Medical Center, Girard had the top bid of $175,000. Florman had the previous high bid of $170,000. After winning the coin flip, Florman placed a bid of $180,000. He'll become the lighthouse's owner at 3 p.m. on Monday -- unless his bid is ecllipsed by another bidder.
The lighthouse is being sold by the federal government. The Coast Guard will continue to maintain the light itself.
