Poetic Discord, Part 2
In response to the omission of poetry from the gubernatorial inauguration, lovers of verse gathered in Portland's Longfellow Square to read poems on Wednesday.
Poetry has been read at gubernatorial inauguratons ever since Governor Angus King created the state poet laureate position in 1995. The poetry reading was omitted from Govenor Paul LePage's swearing in as part of an effort to reduce costs.
The Maine Writers and Publishers Alliance described Wednesday's gathering as a celebration of poetry, not a protest.
