'Results' Cited for Blodgett Firing
UMaine's athletic director said he fired women's basketball coach Cindy Blodgett because "the results on the court are not what we need with the program."
Blodgett was a star player when she was a UMaine student from 1993 to 1998, but she has not enjoyed such success as a coach. Under her four-year tenure, the team has logged a 24-94 record, routinely finishing at or near the bottom of the America East standings.
“This was hard,” athletic director Steve Abbott told the Bangor Daily News. “We have somebody in Cindy Blodgett who has meant an incredible amount to this women’s basketball program here. We consider this to be a marquee program, one that’s very important to the athletic department, very important to the university, and that is looked at from over the whole state. “Cindy worked incredibly hard as a coach, was a very determined individual, but unfortunately the results on the court are not what we need with the program, and I had to make the decision to replace her.".
Blodgett, 35, was quoted by WLBZ-TV in Bangor as saying in a text message that she had been “fired without cause.” She plans to hold a press conference Thursday.
