Ice-out Arrives Early on Maine Lakes
Ice is out on about seventy-five Maine lakes and ponds, according to the Maine Department of Conservation web site. Ice-out has arrived early statewide thanks to the mild winter.
The department relies on residents to report ice-out conditions in their communities and keeps a running list of lake ice-out dates on the web site.
Moosehead Lake ice-out is perhaps the most anticipated date; it was reported this year on April 16, eighteen days earlier than last year, but one day later than reported in 2010.
