New Downeaster Stops Celebrated
Although the stops will not be in use until the fall, transportation officials celebrated the completion of the new Freeport and Brunswick Amtrak stops with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday. Officials rode the Downeaster train rode from Freeport to Brunswick to honor the completion of a project that's been 12 years in the making. The initial Downeaster ran from Boston to Portland, but a 2010 federal economic recovery grant helped upgrade 28 miles of the line and create two new stops to extend the popular service.
Down East welcomed the service in 2002 with a forty-page special called "All Aboard the Downeaster" and celebrated its tenth anniversary in February's North by East.
