What is the official state fossil?

Answer

Pertica quadrifaria, a primitive fern-like plant, flourished in Maine during the Devonian Period, about four hundred million years ago. It was one of the largest plants of its time, standing about six feet tall, and its fossil remains have been found in only three places outside Maine.
