What was the Stanley Steamer?
The Stanley “Steamer” was a steam-powered automobile developed by twins Francis Edgar Stanley (1849–1918) and Freelan O. Stanley (1849–1940) born in Kingfield. Francis died in 1918 when he drove his car into a woodpile while attempting to avoid a farm wagon.
