Go Two-wheeling, Fryeburg

With the price of gasoline hitting levels we never thought imaginable, more Mainers are riding bicycles to and from work than ever before. But if you want to take your newfound affection for the two-wheeler to new heights, head over to Fryeburg for the twentieth Maine Bike Rally, an annual event that features more than thirty rides, some as short as five miles and others as long as a hundred. The events kick off on Friday night with a sunset ride and a stargazing night ride (be sure to bring along your headlights for those), followed by a full weekend of on- and off-road excursions, parades, and even a time trial. This year’s event is expected to draw many new cyclists to western Maine, as Fryeburg was chosen by the League of American Bicyclists as its national rally for this year. “The Maine Bike Rally will acquaint visitors with the region’s beauty, historical and cultural sites, and incredible opportunities for biking and other recreational activities,” remarks Fryeburg Selectman David Knapp. “Local businesses have embraced the rally because of the significant economic benefits that the rally can bring to the area.” The rides all happen in the hills and valleys of western Maine, so you might want to trade in the ten-speed for at least a twenty-one-speed bike. Your lungs will thank you — and so will the environment. 207-623-4511. www.bikemaine.org
