A calico lobster has been caught off Winter Harbor. One lobster in 30 million is colored like this one, which has bright orange and yellow spots.
The lobster is being held at the New England Aquarium for the Biomes Marine Biology Center, a science center in Rhode Island.
This is the second Maine lobster to make news in recent months. In February, a shrimp fisherman found a 27-pound lobster in his net off the coast of Rockland. Rocky, as the crustacean was named, was later released back into the ocean.Portland Press Herald

Dark Shadows, a 1960s Gothic soap opera set in Maine that's being adapted for the big screen by Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, is a true cult classic with a devoted fan base that thrives even forty years after the show went off the air. Camden, Maine is lucky enough to have one of its biggest fans in Willard Carroll who has been amassing an impressive collection of Dark Shadows memorabilia (Carroll is also known for owning the largest Wizard of Oz collection in the world). The collection includes the original ring and cane of Barnabas Collins, a Dark Shadows board game, original set drawings, the soundtrack of the series in 8-track and cassette, Jocette's original music box, and novels based on the series. Click here (and then on the image to the right) for a slideshow of Carroll's items. Photos courtesy of the Willard Carroll Collection.

Maine Senate President Kevin Raye has put forward a proposal that would draft recommendations for restoring a presidential primary voting system in the state. Down East Magazine documented the chaos at the caucuses in our May issue. That combined with Ron Paul winning 21 of 24 Maine delegates, despite losing the popular vote, at this past weekend's Republican convention has spurred an interest in changing the system.
Raye's bill would start a process that would lead to a legislative committee drafting a proposal to be considered next year. The new format would be more like traditional general elections with secret ballots rather than a daylong public vote that can drive away more casual voters.MPBN

Although the process was surrounded by much controversy, Charlie Webster, the chairman of the GOP in Maine, announced Mitt Romney as the winner of the state's caucuses back in February with the largest share of the popular vote. At the state Republican Convention over the weekend, however, Ron Paul, the congressman from Texas, came away with 21 of Maine's 24 delegates to bring with him to the national convention in Tampa, Fla. Supporters reportedly took control of the two-day convention to deliver the victory to Republican presidential nominee. The results are essentially meaningless, however, as Romney has the victory in hand with 850 delegates compared with Paul's 90.Associated Press

Thanks to the mild winter, we'll be battling more ticks and grubs, fewer mosquitoes this year, but the number of blackflies and bees will stay about the same.
“Having a warm winter and dry weather does make a difference for insect survival for a lot of [species]” David Struble, state entomologist for Maine Forest Service, tells the Bangor Daily News.

Daisuke Matsuzaka, aka Dice-K, will sport a Sea Dogs hat on Saturday as he takes the mound at Hadlock Field, hoping to prove he is ready to once again join the Red Sox. He has not pitched since undergoing Tommy John surgery last June, and had been struggling prior to his injury.Portland Press Herald
He was part of the starting rotation that got the Red Sox a title in 2007, and he went an impressive 18-3 in 2008. Since then he hasn't lived up to his $103 million price tag. $51 million went to his former Japanese team and $52 to Dice-K as part of a six year contract that expires at the end of the 2012 season.
In addition to Dice-K, Yankee pitcher Andy Petitte may make a start in Portland on Monday if he stays in Double-A for another game.
