Point of Clarification

Eric Conrad, the executive editor of the Kennebec Journal in Augusta and the Morning Sentinel in Waterville, has left voice mail messages on the phone of a staff writer for Down East magazine complaining about the Media Mutt story titled "New spin or death spiral."
Ordinarily, I wouldn't bother responding to a complaint made to somebody who had nothing to do with the story. But in this case, Conrad raised at least one valid point: My final sentence could stand some clarification.
In it, I wrote that if predictions of doom and gloom for daily papers in Maine come true, "don't expect to read about it in your local newspaper."
Conrad interpreted that to mean that Maine newspapers would suppress bad news about themselves. What I intended to convey was that if the economic forecast put forward by my unnamed source is accurate, there won't be any local papers to report the story.
Sorry for the confusion.
