Maine-made wooden playhouses offer a new summer home — for tots.

Buying a second home might be out of reach this year, but one Maine company would like to convince you that you can afford it. A very small house, that is. Kids Crooked House (888-447-5446, www.kidscrookedhouse.com), based in Windham, creates unusual playhouses in all kinds of crooked shapes and colors. Since 2006, cofounders Glen Halliday and Jeff Leighton have built the houses using exclusively Maine materials from Hancock Lumber. From a haunted house or a castle to an outback surf shack or even a Maine clam shack, if you can dream it up, Kids Crooked House can design a custom playhouse. Running approximately two thousand to five thousand dollars, these houses range from standard to double deluxe in size, though prices vary with intricacy of design. The houses can be delivered throughout the country. Just remember, like most custom-built houses, assembly is required.
