How is Calais pronounced?

Answer

Calais, despite being named for the French channel port, sounds like callous. In other name news, Bangor is Bang-gore, Damariscotta is Dam-ur-scotta, and the town next to Biddeford is pronounced Sah-co. Old timers agree that you don’t pronounce the second “w” in Woolwich (it’s an English thing). Madrid is pronounced MAD-rid, not Ma-DRID, and Vienna is Vy-enna, not Vee-enna.
